Karaoke fans were yesterday urged to learn the lyrics to a medley of popular songs for an attempt at the world's biggest singalong to celebrate the handover.

Organisers hope to earn a place in The Guinness Book of Records with the nine-minute medley of seven songs chosen for their familiarity. But an impromptu rehearsal at the Dynasty Club yesterday made it clear some had a bit of studying to do first.

Around two million people are expected to line the harbour for the light and sound spectacular on July 1.

Henry Cheng Kar-shun of the Better Hong Kong Foundation, which dreamt up the show, hopes another four million will croon along with the television or radio.

'The main purpose is to get everyone involved. We would like six million to sing with one voice to celebrate our reunification.' The seven songs are Children of the Dragon, Pearl of the Orient, The New Moon, Under the Lion Rock, Red Cotton Tree, Tomorrow Will Be a Better Day, and China Dream.

Market researchers A. C. Nielsen-SRH will phone 1,000 people the next day to assess how many took part.
