Sri Lanka's Colombo port handled record container cargo in the first five months of this year, according to the Shipping Ministry. The port handled 660,927 teu (20 ft equivalent units) in the January-May period this year compared to 979,882 teu in the whole of 1996, the state-owned Daily News reported. It did not give comparative figures for the January-May period last year. The newspaper said the port expected to handle 1.5 million teu this year. The Central Bank said last month that Colombo port's revenue rose 80 per cent to 8.3 billion rupees (about HK$1.1 billion) in 1996.
