HUMAN error may have caused a head-on train collision which injured 26 people, rail chiefs said yesterday.
Accident and emergency staff at Tuen Mun Hospital activated their disaster plan to cope with the casualties when two Light Rail Transit trains collided just after 1.45 pm near Siu Hong station at Tuen Mun.
Most suffered head injuries, cuts, bruises and some sustained injuries to their limbs and chest.
The age of victims ranged from under one to 72 years. By late afternoon, only five remained in the hospital's observation ward. Most had been treated and sent home swiftly and none was to be detained overnight.
They were among hundreds of passengers flung through half-full carriages as the emergency brakes were slammed on and the two trains scraped together.
The trains were travelling in opposite directions - one from Yuen Long to Tuen Mun and the other from Tuen Mun to Tin Shiu Wai - at about 10 km/h.
A police inquiry was launched immediately and company investigators will also carry out a probe.
