Hostel places at a university which boasts sea views are proving popular with handover guests. About 900 places at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Sai Kung have been booked for the next two weeks. A university spokesman said the Association for Celebration of Reunification of Hong Kong with China approached the university and said 900 places would be needed mainly for visiting mainland artists for the handover celebrations. Television Broadcasts and Asia Television are running large-scale variety shows on June 30. About 500 artists from the mainland will take part in the TVB show at the Cultural Centre. The Hong Kong Tourist Association said it would identify alternative accommodation in places such as students' rooms at universities for visitors during the handover in case the territory's 34,000 hotel rooms are full. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has about 3,000 hostel places and about 900 have been booked for handover guests, at a daily price of $270 to $310 each.
