Governor's popularity rated higher as end of term nears

Public satisfaction with Governor Chris Patten has returned to a high this month, just days before his departure, according to an Asian Commercial Research poll.

The latest poll showed 79 per cent of respondents were satisfied with the way Mr Patten was doing his job. He received the same rating in the poll conducted in April.

The relevant figures in polls in February and May were 76 per cent and 75 per cent.

The number dissatisfied with his performance was down from 18 per cent in May to 14 per cent.

Fifty-seven per cent of respondents believed Mr Patten was a popular leader while the number who thought people rated him as 'not popular' dropped from 39 per cent to 28 per cent.

There were no big changes to Tung Chee-hwa's ratings.

Fifty-seven per cent of respondents were satisfied with Mr Tung's performance, the same as last month's ratings, while the number of those dissatisfied fell from 35 to 29 per cent.
