Villagers disappointed over the small number of PLA troops arriving in Hong Kong next Monday night yesterday abandoned plans for a welcoming ceremony.

People in the northern New Territories said they cancelled the reception after hearing that only 509 troops would cross the border.

Liu Ching-leung, chairman of the Association of the North District People for the Celebration of the Return of Hong Kong, said they would gather at about 7 am on Tuesday when they believed the main body of troops would arrive.
