And the 39 coaches, lorries and vans due to enter Hong Kong at 9 pm on Monday will need International Circulation Permits for the remaining hours of British sovereignty. After midnight, the vehicles will not need to be registered locally.
A spokesman for the Transport Department said a block had been put on issuing any licence plates with the 'ZG' prefix now reserved for the PLA, in the same way the 'AM' prefix was used for the Government and 'UC' for the Urban Council.
British military vehicles in Hong Kong have the letters 'KL' with two numbers before and after.
