HANDOVER leader Tung Chee-hwa said yesterday the success of Hong Kong under Chinese rule would help Taiwan's return to the mainland. 'If we succeed, obviously it will help in the ultimate objective of reunification,' he told CNN. 'I think Taiwan is part of China and it is the wish of all the Chinese people that at the end of the day the country must be reunited. And I am quite confident this will happen.' Mr Tung said 'peaceful demonstrations' which had traditionally been held in Hong Kong on the anniversary of Tiananmen Square would be allowed to continue. In an interview with NBC, the Chief Executive-designate took a swipe at pro-democracy figures who planned to disrupt the investiture of the new legislature with protests. Nobody could spoil the party, he said. 'If anybody feels they can achieve martyrdom they will be very disappointed,' he said.
