Ronald Leung Ding-bong is set to retain his chairmanship in the election to the Provisional Urban Council today, although his leadership will be challenged by some members.
Yesterday, Democratic Party councillor Fred Li Wah-ming said he was determined to contest the post although he was likely to lose.
'I would like to give him a challenge. He should at least present his platform,' he said. He expected councillors to ask for a five-minute question time for contestants.
Among Mr Li's 10-point platform is that all urban councillors should be returned by direct election.
After negotiations, Ronnie Wong Man-chiu will contest the provisional body's vice-chairmanship along with present vice-chairman Ip Kwok-chung, of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong.
It is understood Mr Wong has secured a number of votes, including support from 11 Democratic Party councillors, and two from the Social Democratic Front. Colleague Ambrose Cheung Wing-sum originally wanted to run for the posts.
