School holds its own handover
A handover party at Glenealy Junior School featured a rock band made up of former students and a play.
The backdrop was a display of children's art to mark the event.
Pupils played and sang famous Chinese classical songs in the school hall. They also performed a play about the history of Hong Kong.
The highlight of the party was a flag ceremony in the playground. Students watched in silence as the British Hong Kong flag was lowered and the Chinese and SAR flags were raised.
Teacher Sean McCavera said: 'The aim of this party is to give the children a clear understanding of the place where they are living. It also enables them to focus on what is happening now.' Besides the party, he said the school had also organised activities to raise students' awareness of the handover.
Year Six pupils had worked on projects on the history of Hong Kong and a visit was arranged to Government House.
