Patriotism policy to blame

It should come as no surprise to anyone that a Caucasian man who wrote to the letters page, 'Victim of racist behaviour' (South China Morning Post, June 20) was spat upon, insulted and slightly assaulted while on a recent MTR journey.

It should also be no surprise that nobody on the train gave assistance as the average Hong Kong citizen, while proud to be rich in material terms, is very poor when it comes to acts of unselfish humanity and never helps when it involves a foreigner or non-Chinese.

From the top down the new administration has called for undying patriotism and has emphasised how great and how proud 'we' should all be that we are Chinese. Together with the highly emotive movie The Opium War, it is inevitable that there will be more racist-related incidents in Hong Kong.

So when will someone from the administration step in? Most likely when it starts to affect the tourism industry. However I would not be surprised if the new administration is unconcerned about racist attacks as its patriotic policy is partly to blame.

As most white-skinned people know, Hong Kong is a very racist city. It is very subtle, but under the surface local people only tolerate foreigners.
