A man who was punched by top rugby player Isi Tu'ivai after fondling the Hong Kong international's fiancee was asking for trouble, a magistrate said yesterday.

Tu'ivai, 26, was fined $3,000 after admitting wounding, but magistrate James Lee Chung-yin refused to make him pay compensation to chef Carl Duggan.

'Wounding is normally a serious offence, but in this case I can only say the man asked for it. This is the price he pays for his behaviour,' said Mr Lee.

Tu'ivai became enraged when he saw Mr Duggan, 25, touch his girlfriend's bottom at the Joe Bananas bar in Wan Chai on May 18, Eastern Court heard.

The couple are due to be married in England on July 19.

Tongan Tu'ivai, a 1.80-metre, 90-kilogram fitness instructor at the California Gym in Central, shouted at Duggan and punched him in the head and neck.

Duggan fled from the bar, but Tu'ivai gave chase and struck him again until he passed out.
