China's first outing at international level could be at the inaugural Asian Sevens, scheduled to be held here in February.
The Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) have targeted China as one of the countries who will be invited to the 16-team competition held for rugby's lesser nations.
Hong Kong, a long-term supporter of Sri Lankan rugby, have also been invited, according to Dr Maiya Gunesekera, president of the SLRFU.
'We will want the Hong Kong Dragons to come and play here. This is a tournament for Asians, and we would not want a full Hong Kong team with all their expatriate players,' said Gunesekera.
Interest, however, will revolve around China's participation. Since joining the International Rugby Football Board in October last year, China have not taken part in an international tournament.
'There would be tremendous interest if we get China here. They are world rugby's newest nation and we should do everything to help them,' said Gunesekera.
