POST-HANDOVER Hong Kong is where the heart is for most people, with more residents now planning to stay than before July 1, a survey shows.
Only 6.2 per cent of people are considering moving abroad or to the mainland, the Social Science Research Centre of Hong Kong University found.
This is a dramatic drop from the 15 per cent who told pollsters for Mastercard International in April that they hoped to emigrate.
The latest poll, which was taken after the reunification, attempted to gauge how the SAR residents viewed their identity.
It found that, if allowed to choose for themselves, more preferred to be seen as Hong Kongers than Chinese - 38.7 per cent against 30.3 per cent.
However, almost a third would like to be seen as citizens of other places or would rather not have to make the choice.
The study showed a widespread commitment to the SAR, with few people even planning to send their children abroad to be educated.
