Pornographic World-Wide Web sites are taking advantage of the poor typing skills of Internet users.

 Typo-prone Web surfers attempting to head for some of the popular addresses like Internet search engines could instead end up at an adult Web site, reports Internet news service, CNET.

 In the latest example, the address www.webcralwer.com, instead of www.webcrawler.com for the popular Internet search engine, sends users over to a porn site.

 Web-site operators hoping to increase the number of 'hits', or visitors, to their usually pay-per-view services, are latching on to this new-found marketing technique.

 Accidently typing www.info sek.com, instead of www.infoseek.

com, the search engine, gets an X-rated site called Hustler Online.

 And typing www.yahhoo.com instead of www.yahoo.com gets you to another porn site, dubbed Raw sex.xxx-com.

 'Typos are pretty common on the Net, and this could certainly send kids where they don't want to go,' said one American webmaster in an e-mail to CNET.

 With Webcralwer.com, users get a message: 'We are currently renovating our search engine.'  Clicking on the search button at that page sends users to a site called Pee-Wee Sherman's Perverted Playhouse. The content on this site is definitely for adults only.

 In a nod to concerned parents, the sites warn users must be 18 years old to enter. The Pee-Wee Sherman site even tells surfers how to get blocking software, like Net Nanny, to block access to kids.

 It's still a bit late, though, as visitors would still see some raunchy photographs before entering.

 Purveying porn is not the only goal of these imitators.

 Other Web sites, like www.

whitehouse.com, not the official government Web site at www.

whitehouse.gov, are satirical.

 At the parody site, visitors can read derisive commentary about US politics and see photos of 'Bubba' the president and 'Big Al' the vice-president.

 The problem seems to be that Web addresses, also known as domain names, become identified by consumers as brands in their own right. It's one of the ways the thousands of Web sites are fighting for attention among users.
