A mother worried about her immigrant daughter's schooling urged a judge to make an instant ruling on her court battle with the Government yesterday.
Yung Yu-kwan hoped an immediate judgment on the rights of the nine-year-old girl, Chow Ka-yi, would secure a place for her in the classroom.
Barrister Kwok Siu-hay passed on her concerns to Mr Justice Brian Keith.
The judge said: 'I think it is premature for me to make a provisional declaration as to the applicant's rights under Article 24 of the Basic Law because that is the very issue upon which the case rests.' He said it would be to 'put the cart before the horse'.
The Education and Immigration departments refused to comment on schooling for specific mainland-born children, but said they would consider cases individually.
