Engineering director Richard Fung Kam-kwan, 41, spends Saturday afternoons with his wife, Louisa Fung Wong-shui Mui, at Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) centres in Wan Chai and Ho Man Tin.
About 7,000 dogs pass through the SPCA every year. Only about 800 find new homes, the rest are humanely destroyed. The SPCA holds a jumble sale every Saturday to raise money.
What's on your mind? The people at the SPCA, especially the kennel people. They don't work there for a job, it's for their love of animals. I admire them. They treat the animals like children and make sure that every dog that comes in is okay for adoption.
Why did you decide to adopt a dog? I was really sad when my last dog, a German shepherd, died eight years ago and I swore I would never get another one. When I have free time, I often go over to the SPCA to play with the dogs. The minute I saw Muffin, I loved him. I changed my mind and decided to offer my home to a homeless dog. I reckoned the mastiff weighed 63 kilograms, but he was a big softie so I took him home to Discovery Bay.
Did you enjoy his company? In the beginning he was okay, and then for some reason we found that something caused him to lose his temper. He would grab my arm and try to pull me away.
He was unpredictable. During the day he was as good as gold, but at night he lost his temper. That's why I joke that he was like a vampire. Eventually he was put down because he was too much of a risk.
