HONG KONG stocks ended last week marginally higher, buoyed by comments from US Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan that took the index to a fresh closing high mid-week.
Over the week, the Hang Seng Index rose 0.56 per cent to 15,658.12 points. Average turnover was $17.06 billion, down from $21.08 billion the previous week.
Over the five sessions, property and commerce sectors posted gains, while finance shares and utility stocks eased.
Infrastructure counter Hopewell was hardest hit. It sank 8.25 per cent on concerns that it may lose its mass-transit project in Bangkok.
The market opened weakly on Monday ahead of Mr Greenspan's mid-week testimony before the United States Congress.
Investors were worried his comments could rattle the stock and bond markets, as testimonies usually give clues as to the probable direction of US interest rate policy.
