THE Government will be expected to maintain PLA sites until the end of the year with the cost borne by the Garrison, the Security Bureau said. Provisional legislator Cheng Kai-nam has asked that the Finance Committee be told if the cost exceeds $8 million. 'Any expenditure item of the maintenance work that exceeded the sum requires the approval of the Finance Committee,' Mr Cheng said. 'The accounting arrangement should be disclosed even though the maintenance cost would be reimbursed by the Garrison afterwards,' he said. A Security Bureau spokesman said that following a request from the Garrison, the Architectural Services Department and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department would be maintaining the sites from July for a period of six months. It had been agreed before the handover that the Government would be responsible for maintaining the military sites handed over to the PLA. The Basic Law says the cost of PLA troops is to be borne by central Government. 'All expenditure, including staff costs of the departments and payment to contractors, will be fully met by the Garrison,' the Security Bureau spokesman said.
