The debate over the interim body would not end with the ruling, the United Front Against the Provisional Legislature warned yesterday.

Its spokesman, the ousted Democratic legislator Andrew Cheng Kar-foo, insisted the legislature's lack of a public mandate made it unacceptable.

'Even though it has gained legal status after many remedial measures from the National People's Congress, I don't see any need for the interim body,' he said.

'I can't see it can represent the public and monitor the administration. So I say it should close down as soon as possible.' Mr Cheng said the Front did not plan any protests against the court's decision since it respected the rule of law, although he hoped there would be an appeal.

'Problems entangling the provisional legislature are not merely legal ones. The question of its public mandate is as important as its legality,' he said.
