Canto-pop diva Faye Wong will make her first major stage appearance in more than a year at the coming Asian Musicfest 97. Wong, who has kept a low profile since her marriage last year and the subsequent birth of her daughter in Beijing, will be among the headlining acts at the three-night musical and fashion extravaganza at East Tamar from August 16 to 18.
Apart from Wong, some of Hong Kong's most established and up-and-coming singers, as well as popular local fashion designers, will appear during the three nights. The event is being organised by Commercial Radio as part of the Hong Kong Tourist Authority's Spotlight on Hong Kong series.
According to CR's special projects director Carrie Law Kar-wai, each of the three-hour shows will have a different 'theme', although the main purpose of the event will be a celebration of musical and fashion trends in Asia.
'Although it was initially tagged as Woodstock Asia, we decided to change it to Asian Musicfest because we felt that the young people would be able to relate to that more than to Woodstock,' Ms Law said. The theme for the first night, the golden era, will feature Wong joined by Jacky Cheung Hok-yau, Andy Lau Tak-wah, Leon Lai Ming, Priscilla Chan Wai-han, Cass Phang Ling, Andy Hui Chi-on, Taiwan's Harlem Yu and Singaporean singer, Mavis Hee.
The second night will feature some of the most popular new artists on the Asian scene and will include British teen heart-throbs Code Red.
'We have chosen two of Hong Kong's fastest rising stars, Ekin Cheng and Leo Ku, to lead a group of other singers who have all won best newcomer awards in recent years,' explained Ms Law.
