Briton Tom Larmour, married and living in Stanley Beach Road, was certified dead at Eastern Hospital after fire services officers pulled his body from stormy seas off Stanley Main Street.

A 20-year-old American surnamed Goetez was unconscious in hospital last night and his 19-year-old companion, also an American, surnamed O'Brien was unhurt.

Forty-one other people were injured in incidents across the territory as the strongest winds in 14 years brought chaos to road, air and sea transport.

A police spokesman said the two Americans, both Hong Kong ID card holders who were back in the territory from studying in the United States, had been sitting on the steps in the seawall close to the water opposite the bar area of Stanley Main Street.

'They were having a beer and watching the waves at about 9 pm when suddenly a big wave came and they fell in,' he said.
