Arrangements for closing the new Lantau Link in stormy weather will be reviewed after engineers found the bridge could withstand stronger gusts than estimated during Typhoon Victor.

And guidelines for operational arrangements for Chek Lap Kok airport and the Tsing Ma Bridge are being worked out to minimise inconvenience to commuters in case of closure during storms.

Government engineers said Victor, which crossed the Tsing Ma Bridge on Saturday night, had given them a good chance to test the structural strength of the link, which was opened two months ago.

It was partly closed on Friday when typhoon signal number three was hoisted and closed completely for the first time on Saturday at 2 pm when the number eight signal was raised.

A Highways Department source said it would review the performance of the bridge during the typhoon.

Department engineers found readings on the sideways swing of the bridge caused by gusts reached 70 to 80 per cent of the level they had estimated when the number eight signal was raised.

Under existing guidelines, only vehicles less than 1.6 metres in height can use the upper deck of the bridge when a number three signal is hoisted.
