Mainland children fighting for the right to stay in Hong Kong have been unable to secure school places despite a promise from the Government, parents say.

More than 1,000 mainland-born children with permanent resident parents are awaiting the outcome of legal proceedings to see whether they will be deported.

Many parents say the Government told them their children would be entitled to education regardless of their status.

An official report last year to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child said the Government would give mainland-born children the same chance of education as other children.

A spokesman for the Immigration Department said the status of each child had to be clarified with the Education Department before a school place could be offered.

But Law Yau Shuk-ching said her eight-year-old son had been awaiting approval for about a year.

'I have no idea why it took so long for them to screen my son's status. My son was given recognisance papers and they should have all the necessary information in hand,' said the mother of three.
