Rollerblading for a purpose

BRUCE Marsh (South China Morning Post, March 1) highlighted the need for action on underage drinking in light of the recent Lan Kwai Fong tragedy.

He suggested that since rollerblading has recently become popular (it is in fact the fastest growing sport of the 90s), either the Government or private investors could build a roller-rink to provide teenagers and families with access to a sport which isnovel, thrilling but healthy.

As a mother of three teenage blade fanatics and a promoter of the sport in Hongkong, I would certainly be very keen to see an initiative of this kind. I am also currently working on preparations for a charity blade day event to be held in the Tsim Sha Tsui area later this year, and would welcome assistance from the Government or private sponsors.

Any profits from the event will be donated to the Warehouse project - another sadly unfunded but badly needed project for teenagers.

Unfortunately the Hongkong authorities are as notoriously slow at helping with the promotion of new sports in the territory as they are at tackling the lack of facilities for teenagers.
