A migrant who got nine As in this year's Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination need not worry about her education fees thanks to a donation from a South China Morning Post reader.
Lau Ho-ying, who came from Guangdong five years ago, was told yesterday that a businessman had given $20,000 to further her studies.
'I was told few Hong Kong people can spare time to care for others and some even look down on new migrants. But this is surely wrong,' Ho-ying said.
'There are many kind people in Hong Kong. And I hope people can treat us new migrants fairly as we are all Chinese.' The 18-year-old will continue her studies at the Buddhist Sin Tak College. Five years ago she spoke little English.
She and her father, Lau Hing-cheung, live in a 120-square-foot flat without a lift or air-conditioner.
Her mother is in Guangzhou and it is uncertain when she can come to Hong Kong.
