The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has disclosed that his pay as an MP and head of government is M$16,000 (HK$44,320) a month.
The figure puts him at the lower end of the regional salary scale.
It is just a little more than one-tenth of the wage earned by his Singapore counterpart, Goh Chok Tong, who is one of the world's highest-paid politicians.
But Dr Mahathir said elected representatives and civil servants should not seek wealth and prosperity.
Calling on MPs and the public service to fight corruption, Dr Mahathir said they should discard self-interest. He said a country full of corrupt leaders would never succeed.
The Government is engaged on a drive to eliminate or reduce graft in political parties and has recently given additional powers to the Anti-Corruption Agency.
