I recently returned to the US from a four-week business trip to Hong Kong.

While in Hong Kong, I had the opportunity to visit Stanley Market, a favourite tourist destination.
After visiting the market twice, I watched a television programme that included a report on plans to 'renovate' the market in order to 'improve' it.
This would be a horrendous mistake.
The conceptual plans I saw depicted a multi-storey, sanitised, mall-like building without a soul.

I firmly believe that Stanley Market is the strong tourist draw precisely because of its existing character and ambience.
