Professor Patrick Lau Sau- shing, the head of HKU's Department of Architecture, said the Centre of Architecture and Urban Design for Hong Kong and China would lead to an increase in the publication of research findings and more conferences involving local and mainland academics.

HKU stresses the importance of applying computer technology in architectural design and is continually upgrading architecture standards in the department.

With these goals in mind, an Architecture Design Research Unit also has been established.

'As the computer is becoming a powerful tool in architecture, a teaching laboratory and a big research laboratory have been set up in our department,' Professor Lau said.
