The Star Ferry will be cruising into party mode for its 100th birthday next year with quizzes on board, gifts for passengers and free rides.
Commemorative stamps and phone cards, souvenir models and a centennial book are also on the cards, ferry bosses said yesterday as they unveiled celebratory plans.
A photographic and a painting competition will be launched next month along with a contest to design a logo to celebrate the last 100 years.
The first Star Ferry crossing was on May 1, 1898. To mark the centenary the boats will be adorned with fairy lights and will be free on April 30.
Star Ferry Company general manager Frankie Yick Chi-ming said they were thinking of running scratch card and quiz games on board in the run-up to the big day.
The highlight will be a 'grand ceremony' which could include a party on one of the 12 ferries followed by a variety show and banquet.
