Three athletes from Hong Kong Technical College (Chai Wan) are fighting for medals at the World University Games in Italy.

  The territory's students are competing in Sicily in a 30-strong team under the name Hong Kong, China.

  'We don't know if we can win but we will try our very best,' said sprinter and hurdler Tung Chung-man.

 Tung said they had been running about three hours a day during training for the games.

   Sprinter Wan Kin-yee said the work was very hard but necessary.

  'We have in-born talent for sports but years of commitment have, to a great extent, helped us achieve brilliant results,' she said.

    Wan recently ran a personal best time for the 400 metres hurdles in South Korea and Tung also achieved his best result in the 4 x 400 m relay in New Delhi, India.

  'We want to break our own records in the games and make better progress than ever before,' said Wan.

 Although sport has brought them honours, they have decided not to follow careers in athletics.

  'It's quite difficult to take sports as a future career unless the government gives you full support,' Wan said.

   The third of the trio, Tang Wing-kin, a middle-distance runner, said young athletes in the United States received sponsorship from business and government.

 The SAR squad, organised by the Hong Kong Post-Secondary Colleges Athletic Association, is competing in athletics, basketball, diving, gymnastics, swimming and tennis events.
