Illegal immigrants from the mainland and Vietnam account for about five per cent of the jail population, according to Secretary for Security Peter Lai Hing-ling. There are about 484 in jail, of which 325 are serving sentences of over 15 months. The majority of the prisoners, or 455, are mainland Chinese.
