Excel Kid sounds warning of Moore success to come

It was time to take stock for the majority of trainers at Sha Tin yesterday morning after some hectic trackwork over the past few days.

And the relatively quiet morning gave the chance for a long, hard look at some of trainer John Moore's team.

Moore finished right on the heels of Ivan Allan and David Hayes in last season's premiership and is certain to figure again judging on the appearance of some of his team.

His Excel Kid was not asked to make any time but the handsome son of Theatrical looked very strong working over 800 metres and should measure up to top company this season.

He suffered a bad back injury mid-term last season and a couple of bad runs around that time are better forgotten when assessing his quality.

Stablemate Flirting Dancer has dropped to a competitive mark, has a good record fresh and looks in good condition - he finished off a solid 1,200-metre gallop looking ready to run a forward race when first produced.

Moore has a strong string of youngsters and one worth watching is the Snippets three-year-old Cetshwayo.

He had just one run last term, finishing last to Happy Boy when he did pull up distressed.

There was some support for Cetshwayo on that occasion and he has developed well over the summer.

Yesterday he was sent over 800 metres with the veteran Asian Glory and did it in fine style - he may not be an early winner but it will be a surprise if he does not earn his keep.

Among others to impress were the Hayes-trained Strikers and his galloping companion Projectvision.

Strikers has been burning up the tracks and should be hard to beat first-up while Projectvision is a fluent mover who won at his only start at Southwell on the fibresand.

Chris Cheung Ting-pong gave a few of his stable serious hitouts at last Saturday night's grass trial session and Proud Of You - an impressive trial winner - again went stylishly for Paddy Payne, dashing home the last 400 metres at the end of a 1,200-metre gallop in 1:20.6.

Similarly Intrepid Star, winner of his heat, was kept up to the mark and is primed for a big effort.

Others to catch the eye were Always Cheerful, Lucky Lord, Kiwi Star, Saint Galore and Well Known Supreme.
