We refer to the letter from Alice Lee (South China Morning Post, August 22), regarding the bus service of Route No 34.
Route No 34 operates between Bayview Garden and Kwai Shing (Central). As Kwai Shing is a redeveloping area, passenger surveys are conducted on a regular basis to monitor the changing passenger demand.
It was observed that even during peak hours, the occupancy rate of the buses was only 40 to 50 per cent.
To fully utilise the carrying capacity of each bus, as of July 14 the five conventional double-deck buses were replaced by 10 air-conditioned single-deck buses enabling the frequency to be improved from every 12 to 20 minutes to eight to 15 minutes.
The arrangement also consists of a package of improved facilities on board for passengers including air grilles and more comfortable seating.
Our operation staff have been instructed to closely monitor the service and adjustments will be made whenever necessary.
