Tighter border controls are being introduced to stop mainland mothers and children sneaking in with crowds authorised to enter Hong Kong to attend school.
Hong Kong-born children living in the mainland are allowed to enter the SAR to attend school with a valid Restricted Area entry permit.
New rules include a compulsory shuttle bus offered by one kindergarten and three primary schools in the Sha Tau Kok Restricted Area running between Chung Ying Street and the schools before and after lessons.
Students have to board the school buses under the eyes of police guarding the pick-up point at Chung Ying Street.
The new rules were laid down this month after a compromise was reached by police, the Education Department and the Security Bureau for the new school year.
The Security Bureau did not want to comment on whether illegal immigrants had been caught mingling with the schoolchildren.
