HONGKONG University beat Saturday League champions Little Sai Wan in the Butani Cup quarter-finals yesterday to remain on course to retain the trophy.

 After restricting Sai Wan to 146 for nine in the maximum 35 overs, the University reached their target for the loss of two wickets with three overs in hand.

 It was a strong all-round performance that carried the University to their eight-wicket win at Mission Road.

 Their best bowlers were left-arm spinner Simon Cooper, who conceded only 11 runs off eight overs for two wickets, and medium-pacer Mark Winstanley, whose three for 39 followed his four for nine against the Merchants the previous week.

 David Fisher top-scored for Sai Wan with 46.

 The University's leading batsmen steered them to a comfortable victory, with the winning runs coming off the first ball of the 32nd over.

 Phil Glenwright led the way with an unbeaten 71 after putting on 93 for the first wicket with Mike Speak, who made 22. Bob Adamson finished unbeaten on 23 after Martin Sabine had scored 21.

 At the Kowloon Cricket Club, home team Crusaders beat Hongkong Cricket Club's Gap Ramblers by five wickets after Ramblers had won the toss and batted.

 Ramblers were dismissed for 180 in the last of their 35 overs, with more than half the runs coming from the bat of Seamus O'Brien (92). Skipper Peter Williams was the next highest scorer with 22.

 The main wicket-takers for Crusaders were Mark Eames, with three for 47, Jim Middleton (two for 32) and Tony Lethbridge (two for 45).

 Crusaders were made to fight all the way by Ramblers, who eventually went down in the last over of the match.

 Ray Brewster top-scored for Crusaders with 59, receiving good support from Eames (29) and Richard Whittington (23). But there were only four deliveries to spare when the win was clinched.

 Nick Hutton did most of the damage with three for 31, while wicket-keeper Grant Docherty held four catches for Ramblers.

 At So Kon Po, Kowloon Cricket Club's Tartars beat Craigengower by 121 runs to progress to the last four.

 Tartars rattled up 301 for seven in 34 overs thanks to their Sri Lankan trio of Charlie Goonesena, who top-scored with 87, Riyaz Farcy, who made 64, and Nanda Perera (37), and hard-hitting Australian David Thompson, who struck a half-century.

 John Freeman was again Craigengower's top wicket-taker, with three for 75.

 The highlight of Craigengower's reply of 180 for five was an unbeaten century from Peter Fitzgerald. Mohamood Rizmie captured two for 11.

 There was another close finish at Hongkong Cricket Club, where home side Nomads beat Kai Tak by six runs.

 Another strong batting display lifted Nomads to 243 for six in 35 overs, with the major contributions coming from Mike Swift (65), Bob Stiller (51), Paul Varty (33), Steve Foster (25) and Tim Davies (25 not out).

 David Crowe and Chris Magee both took two wickets - but at a much higher cost than usual, Crowe going for 57 runs and Magee for 44.

  An elegant 111 from left-hander Jonathan Orders, who hit 12 fours and five sixes, backed up by 39 from Alan Burge and 37 from Philippe Lacamp took Kai Tak close and they needed 10 for victory off the final over.

 But paceman Davies, who played for Hongkong in last weekend's Southeast Asian tournament in Thailand, won the day by conceding only three to finish with two for 39.
