Russian defenceman Vyacheslav Fetisov, who helped the Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup, and who was among three club members injured in a car crash, has signed a one-year contract.
The terms were not disclosed.
Fetisov, 39, recorded five goals and 23 assists in 64 games last season. He added four assists in 20 play-off games as the Red Wings swept the Philadelphia Flyers to earn their first Stanley Cup in 42 seasons.
Fetisov, a long-standing captain of the Soviet Union's Central Red Army team, spent the close season recovering from injuries suffered in the accident in June in Detroit, which also put teammate Vladimir Konstantinov and the team trainer in hospital.
After recuperating, Fetisov took the Stanley Cup to Moscow with Russian teammates Igor Larionov and Vyacheslav Kozlov.
'We are very pleased to announce that Slava will return for one more year,' Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said.
