I refer to the letter headlined, '999 refuses to give help', which appeared in the South China Morning Post, on September 8.

As stated in previous responses to queries about the 999 Emergency Response System, Chinese (Cantonese) and English language proficiency is a requirement for 999 operators. Callers seeking assistance should be able to do so using either language.

Whilst the scenario described in the letter is disturbing, insufficient detail is provided to permit an internal investigation to be carried out to ascertain what went wrong and what remedial action needs to be taken. I shall be grateful therefore if the author will take the time to call me on 2866 6133 and provide more information to help establish what exactly happened.
