I agree with your editorial of September 2 headlined, 'Star turn', that it would be a pity if next year sees the end of the Star Ferry.
I understand that the Government is always under pressure from various political parties or pressure groups to open all franchises to competition.
Competition may be the only solution to a better service for unsuccessful public services, like China Motor Bus, but competition is not the goal, but rather, one means to better service.
Star Ferry is providing a satisfactory service that continues to improve.
I do not see the necessity for the Government to terminate its service or threaten to terminate it.
A responsible government should put public benefit in first place and try to rise above pressures brought by vested interests.
