Martial arts grandmaster Yu Jim-yuen, who died on Monday at the age of 94, made teaching his traditional brand of kung fu into his life's work.

Born in Beijing in 1903, Yu gave kung fu lectures to youngsters in China, Hong Kong and the United States until two years ago.

Among his most famous students were film giants Jackie Chan Kwong-sang and Sammo Hung Kam-po and their 'brothers' Yuen Biao, Yuen Kwai, Yuen Wah, Ng Yuen-chun and Yuen Bo.

The students, better known as the 'Seven Little Lucky Stars', helped to launch Yu's fame as a teacher.

Yu, an opera singer with traditional kung fu training, arrived in Hong Kong in the 1950s.

He built a training school - the Chinese Opera Research Institute - on Mirador Mansion rooftop in Tsim Sha Tsui in the 1960s, hoping to pass on his brand of traditional Chinese arts to youngsters while also earning his living.

In late 1961, when their son was just seven years old, Jackie Chan's parents contracted Yu to raise him.
