The Broadcasting Authority yesterday criticised ATV and TVB for 'prejudicial' coverage of a gang murder during prime-time entertainment programmes.

 Show hosts were also accused of making inappropriate comments about the gruesome killing of Luk Chi-wai, 15, allegedly by a gang of at least eight youngsters.

 Both television stations claimed they did not know prosecution proceedings had started at the time the programmes were broadcast on May 19.

 Hong Kong Today and Focus on Focus aired features about Luk.

 The youth was beaten to death and his body burned and dumped on a rubbish tip in Sau Mau Ping Estate.

 The Broadcasting Authority said the reports 'were presented in a manner which was likely to prejudice a fair trial'.

 'The hosts in both programmes made comments which prejudged the murder case,' the authority said.

 'Furthermore, ATV included reconstruction footage of the homicide case.

 'The [authority] decided to give 'an advice' to TVB and 'a strong advice' to ATV for reporting a criminal case for which proceedings have commenced in a manner which would likely prejudice a fair trial.'   A TVB spokesman said the criticism was 'a fair decision'.

 But she added: 'We thought we were airing the show before prosecution commenced. It was never our intention to prejudice the trial or cause contempt of court.'  An ATV spokesman apologised for the programme.

 'We are sorry. We made careless mistakes in the story,' he said.

 'I am sure we will be more careful next time.'  Norman Leung Nai-pang, who chaired the authority's complaints committee for three years, was promoted to head of the Broadcasting Authority.
