AFTER more than two hours of vigorous competition in the ''Class 93 - 'Folk' Church Music (Under-19)'', St Francis' Canossian College choir emerged winners over 13 other rival schools at the Schools Music Festival. As the best performer in this class, the choir won the Dr D.F. Woo Memorial Trophy. Adjudicator Malcolm Tyler said just before the start of competition: ''This afternoon, I am looking yet for performances of quality and also those that can entertain audiences.'' Among the 14 performances, Mr Tyler was much impressed by the music piece Mono Tone Angel by Don McAfee, performed by the St Francis' Canossian choir. ''It was a very good choice of music for this class and I thought that was a very attractive performance in which the angel was splendid and the choral singing excellent,'' the adjudicator said. ''They made the Mono Tone Angel very convincing with splendid tone.'' The teacher-in-charge of the winning school, Mrs Maria Jim Lam Wai-kam, said they did not expect to win because there were so many schools which were outstanding. The St Francis' Canossian choir, which consists of 60 girls ranging from Forms 3 to 6, this was not the first time they had won in the music festival. In the past few years, they have clinched a number of prestigious prizes. ''We practised twice a week during lunch time. As the competition date approached, we increased our pace, even holding after-school sessions,'' Mrs Jim said. In order to prepare well, choir members also practised on their own during the school holidays. The music teacher attributed their triumph to the choice of the beautiful song and the ability of choir members to interpret the theme correctly and in a lively manner. Asked whether there would be some celebration for their success, Mrs Jim said members would be appropriately rewarded later. ''It is good to see in a class like this where you put in ideas of your own, and thinking what you can do to make the music even more exciting,'' Mr Tyler said. ''You take a chance to do something in the music even more exciting; make the word exciting; do something to draw one's attention by bringing in an instrument; or by using your feelings, your body and even your fingers.''
