Accessing information from a media source is a skill which students will be using throughout their lives. It is worth learning properly.

So let's get started by looking at the language of newspapers. Many of these terms may be new to you and require introduction. Try memorising as many as you can, as we will be using them in our activities.

Advertising - A means to sell products to potential buyers through use of paid notices stressing the advantages and reasons to buy those products.

Advertisement

Assignment - Instructions given to a reporter on what story to pursue and possible angles to include.

Background - Information that gives a reporter further insight into a story, but does not necessarily appear in the article.

Beat - A specific subject, like the police or fire department. A reporter regularly covers news originating there.
