The Commonwealth raised a proposal yesterday to maintain links with Hong Kong during meetings with China's representative in the SAR and the Chief Executive. Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku wants non-government organisations and professional associations to maintain ties with counterparts in the group of nations based on the former British Empire. He discussed it with Foreign Ministry Commissioner Ma Yuzhen and Tung Chee-hwa in meetings held on the margins of the World Bank/ IMF conference. 'Both sides are looking at it further and exploring the range of contacts,' said a Commonwealth spokesman. Chief Anyaoku believes the Basic Law provides enough latitude to allow professional, economic and social groups to continue associating with Commonwealth organisations. He says the links would maintain Hong Kong's international status.
