TWO Chinese-language dailies yesterday splashed their front pages with fake pictures appearing to show Diana, Princess of Wales, trapped in the car crash that killed her.
The fuzzy picture printed in the Apple Daily and Oriental Daily News was a fake but appeared to show Diana and her companion, Dodi al-Fayed, trapped in the wreckage.
Both papers said the picture was not authentic, but Hong Kong Journalists' Association chairman Carol Lai Pui-yee said they had still been wrong to publish it.
'We must be careful or we will lose the reputation and credentials of our profession in the eyes of the public.' She said an investigation could be launched if people complained.
The picture was first published by the mass-circulation France-Soir newspaper on Friday. It was pulled off the Internet after being posted on a United States-based site.
It is thought to actually show a car crash in Britain in which one of the victims was, like the princess, a blonde.
