Following the trend of raising money in Hong Kong for mainland charities, Project Hope's 'Wonders of the Chinese Dynasty' charity gala saw local socialites don Chinese costumes and fancy dress.
The ballroom of the Regent Hotel was transformed into an imperial banquet hall and guests feasted on shark's fin and bird's nest; they were entertained by a retinue of Canto-pop singers and comedians provided by the comperes. The highlight of the lavish evening was when the winners of the three awards - for most outstanding image, most popular image and best-dressed celebrity - were announced. The event, sponsored by the Wealth Mill Entertainment Group, raised $5.8 million for Project Hope, a charity founded in 1989 to build schools and provide educational opportunities for underprivileged children in rural parts of China.
