Latin American financial leaders say they support financial liberalisation if it can be introduced flexibly. Speaking for Latin American states at the IMF-World Bank annual meeting, Chile's Central Bank governor Carlos Massad said the region supported the IMF's move to expand its role to include facilitating liberalisation of capital accounts. 'By broadening the fund's jurisdiction, it will be possible to ensure that the natural process of deregulation that is spontaneously occurring will be more orderly, efficient and balanced,' Mr Massad said.
