Time flies. We come to the last episode and I'll leave you with the haunting memory of these three very nostalgic songs. The first is As Time Goes By, originally from a 1931 musical Everybody's Welcome by Herman Hupfeld, but made immortal by the film classic Casablanca (the famous line 'Play it again, Sam' was actually never spoken). 'You must remember this: a kiss is still a kiss. A sigh is just a sigh. The fundamental things apply as time goes by. 'And when two lovers woo, they still say 'I love you'. On that you can rely . . . Moonlight and love songs are never out of date. 'Hearts full of passion, jealousy and hate . . . It's still the same old story. A fight for love and glory. A case of do or die. The world will always welcome lovers, as time goes by!' Next, an immortal number from another long forgotten 1960 musical The Fantasticks (music by Harvey Schmidt, lyrics by Tom Jones): Try to Remember. It tells of 'December' (representing mature age) remembering 'September' (that is, youth). 'Try to remember the kind of September when I was a tender and callow fellow . . . Try to remember when life was so tender that dreams were kept beside your pillow . . . that no one wept except the willow . . . that love was an ember about to billow (burst into flame) . . . Deep in December, it's nice to remember. Although you know the snow will follow . . . (And the best line:) Without a hurt, the heart is hollow! And finally, my favourite song My Cup Runneth Over (a line taken from the Book of Psalms ), again from an obscure musical of 1966 called I do! I do! (by the Harvey Schmidt/Tom Jones pair), an ode to love and marriage! 'Sometimes in the morning when shadows are deep, I lie here beside you, just watching you sleep. And sometimes I whisper what I'm thinking of. My cup runneth over (overflows) with love . . . I study the small things you do constantly. I memorise moments that I'm fondest of . . . 'In only a moment we both will be old. We won't even notice the world turning cold. And so in this moment the sunrise above. My cup runneth over with love!' And what is there to learn about English?
