Chartered raises mortgage rates

Standard Chartered Bank followed the lead of its competitors by raising its mortgage rate by 25 basis points, a move initiated last month by Hongkong Bank and Chase Manhattan Bank. The new mortgage rate is 9.75 per cent, 1 per cent over the prime lending rate. That rate is reserved for banks' most credit-worthy customers.
