SIMON Winchester is better known as a scribe than an electronic multimedia publisher.

But through their Hongkong-based CD-ROM (compact disc read only memory) developer called InterOptica Publishing, Winchester and his wife Catherine are beginning to grab some headlines of their own as CD-ROM moves relentlessly into the mainstream.

InterOptica has been developing travel titles on CD-ROM - to run off the Apple Macintosh - for several years, one of the first companies in the region to enter the market.

The company has recently been rewarded for its efforts. The Apple user's bible - MacWorld magazine - awarded InterOptica top honours for its CD-ROM-produced Great Cities of the World, Volume 2, giving it the prize for Best Travel/Geography.

The InterOptica offering was one of 10 awarded by the magazine, and the only title from Asia to receive a prize.

CD-ROM technology has long held the promise of greatness as a new medium for the publishing industry, though it remains just that - a promise - with the market having been slower to develop than many had thought.

To be fair, the prospects for CD-ROM still look good, especially as the cost of new multimedia technologies has fallen.
